Application Procedures

The Combined Graduate Program in Nutrition/Dietetic Internship admits up to 20 students per year.

Application Procedures

  • IMPORTANT: The Appalachian State University Dietetic Internship will be using DICAS for the spring 2022 match.
  • Only students who are enrolled in or have completed an undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) may apply to the Dietetic Internship and the Graduate Program in Nutrition.
  • Only students who have been accepted into the Dietetic Internship through the DICAS match can be admitted to the Graduate Program.

Application to the Dietetic Internship

  • The Appalachian State University Combined MS / DI utilizes the online Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System, DICAS
    • Deadline: the online application must be completed by 11:59 pm Central Time on February 15, 2023.
    • Cost: the fee to use DICAS is $50 for the first application submitted and $25 for each additional application.
  • Applicants must register on the D&D Digital Web site and submit their prioritized list of selected dietetic internships online to D&D Digital before February 15, 2023. There is a $65 matching fee. Applicants should call D&D Digital prior to the deadline if they do not receive an e-mail with login information. 
  • Notification Day will be on April 2, 2023


  • Official transcripts for all colleges and universities attended should be sent to: DICAS. View the DICAS 'Sending Official Transcripts' page for more information. 
  • Personal statement should be as concise as possible and address strengths, weakness, short and long-term nutrition career goals, as well as why you think BWH would be a “good fit” for you.
  • Three references should be included. Ideally, one should be from a work supervisor, the other two can be from academic advisors, volunteer supervisors, and/or supervisors of nutrition related experiences.


  • Once an applicant is matched with the App State MS / DI they must send a confirmation email to the DI Director, Amanda Hege, to confirm their acceptance within 24-hours of matching. 
  • After matching with the App State MS / DI program, incoming students will receive information about completing the online App State Graduate School Application. 

 Application to the Graduate School

  • Graduate School Application Deadline for starting 2022 Fall Semester: July 1, 2022.
  • Entrance Requirements — Acceptance into the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies at Appalachian and acceptance into the Dietetic Internship occur simultaneously. In the first calendar year of the two year program students complete 21 hours of graduate coursework. To continue the graduate program and enter the dietetic internship the second year, students must: 1) Complete the first yeart of graduate studies with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and 2) Complete research requirements (NUT 5901 or NUT 5999).

Pre-select Option

The Appalachian State University Combined Graduate Program in Nutrition and Dietetic Internship utilizes a preselect process, as well as a computer matching process. The program selects up to 10 students per year who meet preselect criteria. The criteria include:

  • Enrollment in the Appalachian State University Didactic Program in Dietetics (ASU DPD) program
  • Completion of all DPD requirements prior to beginning the ASU DI
  • Graduation from Appalachian State University prior to entering the ASU DI
  • Acceptance into the Appalachian State University Graduate School

The applicant must provide the Dietetic Internship Director with a complete DICAS application by January 15, 2022, 11:59 PM (application forms, including 3 letters of recommendation, letter of application, GRE scores, DPD Verification Statement or Intent to Complete form). The applicant will be notified on or before February 1, 2022 regarding his or her acceptance or rejection by the program. The remaining positions will be filled using the computer matching process.
If an applicant is preselected, the Dietetic Internship Director will provide the applicant’s email address and name to D & D Digital by February 1, 2022. This information will be used to ensure that the student does not participate in computer matching.
Applicants who are not admitted to the program through the preselect option may apply to other dietetic internships including the Appalachian State University Dietetic Internship through the computer matching process. The deadline to apply for the April match is February 15, 2022.

First Year (On Campus)

  • Annual in state tuition and fees: $7,900, Out of state: $21,332
  • Summer tuition: $667.53 in state and $1,669.53 out of state (3 CH)
  • Books ( about $500/yr)
  • Health Insurance ($2,540/yr) This can be waived if you have coverage elsewhere.
  • Living expenses ($1000-$1800/month) This depends on the number of roommates and distance from campus.

Second (Internship) Year

  • Instate tuition and fees (estimate): $7,900, Out of state: $21,332
  • Books (about $250)
  • Health Insurance ($2,540/yr) This can be waived if you have coverage elsewhere.
  • Liability Insurance ($50/yr)
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics membership fees ($75/yr) includes NCDA membership
  • NCAND Regional Meetings (about $200)
  • Transportation to various facilities (about $80/week)
  • Living expenses ($1000-$1800/month)
  • Lab coat, immunizations, drug tests, incidentals ($350-$400)
